Congratulations! You will soon be holding a sweet new baby in your arms. I can't wait to help document this special time in your family's life. My goal for newborn sessions are to make them as comfortable and easy going for your whole family.
Lifestyle newborn sessions are easy and laid back. I'll pose you in natural positions in great light as you engage with your baby as you do on a daily basis. Siblings are welcome to hop in and out of the frame as needed. If your baby needs to eat, we can always break for that as well. We will follow your baby's lead. When it is time to capture your baby by themselves, there are zero expectations. Your baby can be awake or asleep. I will wrap your baby in a simple wrap and lay them on the bed in beautiful light and photograph all of their perfect details. For variety, I'll unwrap them and capture their hands and feet and they stretch out naturally. Siblings are welcome to interact as they'd like during these shots. If your baby doesn't want to leave your arms, we can still get the same type of images with you holding them.
There are a few great options for locations for your newborn session. The ultimate goal is to capture your little one in an environment that is most comfortable for your family. Maybe you'd like to capture the baby's first room and all of the details of what makes your house a home. Maybe you'd like to go for a clean, timeless setting like the lifestyle studio. Or perhaps you love being outdoors and want a more organic feel to your session and would prefer an outdoor newborn session. Whichever option fits your family best, we will capture this beautiful time in your family's journey.
If you are having an in-home newborn session, I will arrive and ask you to show me the rooms that have the best natural light. We will never use indoor, overhead lights as they are a different color than natural light. Optimally, we would use the master bedroom, nursery, and/or living room. Typically we will start with family photos since siblings usually need a little time to warm up. After a few family photos, we will move on to sibling + baby so we have the chance to capture them before siblings loose interest. Next, we capture mom and dad together and separately with baby and then at the end, we capture baby on their own. This is a fluid flow and if we need to change it around for any reason, we absolutely will. Siblings are welcome in any shots and are never discouraged from being in the frame. These sessions usually last about 1.5- 2 hours and we can use multiple rooms throughout the session.
If you're having an in-home session, do NOT try to make your home immaculate! You just had a baby. Having had two babies myself, I know that cleaning takes a backseat to a cup of coffee or a nap. De-clutter (i.e. push aside) cups, cords, or other distracting items from the side tables around the couch and bed. It can literally all be pushed across the room. I can always help with this when I arrive, too. I have lived in this season of life and am a master of capturing beautiful images among chaos.
For an in-studio session, you'll arrive and I will start by wrapping your baby up in a simple wrap. If you have a toddler, we will gauge their comfort level and either start with family shots or baby by themselves. Sometimes little ones want to see what its all about before they participate. Once siblings are comfortable, we will work with the family as a whole and then siblings with the baby. I don't force anything with siblings. If your toddler doesn't want to interact with the baby by themselves, we can easily get great shots of them in your lap engaging with your baby. Finally we will capture mom and dad with baby together and individually. These sessions are typically 1-1.5 hours.
If you are coming to the studio for your newborn session, just bring a clean onesie for your baby, a pacifier if you allow one, and extra diapers. If your toddler may need a snack during the session, bring a snack that is clean, dry, and small. Cheerios, puffs, and crackers are good options for snacks.
For an outdoor session, we will choose a location that gets great shade to make sure your new baby doesn't get exposed to too much sun. These sessions are dependent on sunlight, so we will either need to do them early in the morning or late in the evening. These sessions are very similar to outdoor family sessions. We will start with the family as a whole and then move on to capturing siblings with the new baby. Depending on the age of the siblings, parents may be necessary in these shots to assist with holding the baby. Then we will capture mom and dad with the baby and, lastly, the baby on their own. I have a moses basket I can bring to safely photograph the baby while they aren't being held. These sessions will last about an hour.
Tell your children that a friend will be coming to take photos of them and their new baby. You can tell them that they will have many opportunities to snuggle mom and dad and it will be a fun way to celebrate them becoming a big sibling. This is a very delicate time for new siblings and I am very sensitive to that dynamic. Your child will be able to be as involved as they want to be. We will capture natural interactions with your child with your new baby, however, we will not force it. Keeping the pressure low and allowing children and toddlers to explore the new baby in a way they are comfortable is how you get the best images of your new family together. Resist the urge to bribe your child. Bribing implies that this is a situation they have little control over and that the expectations are high. We will let your child be little and sensitive to their feelings as they adjust to welcome the newest member into their family.
